Bike Stat Blues

We're rolling now, my second ride of the year is in the books. Another beautiful day, another beautiful ride. This time I remembered the "START" function on the GPS. I have the stats and even though they are a slight improvement over last year, I am a little disappointed over how similar they are. Considering that I am at least 20 lbs. lighter than last March and I consistently worked out over the winter and walked 4 to 5 times a week, I expected to see a lot better numbers than this.

But you know what? No use wasting time or energy fretting about it. I will use this as motivation to get better, faster & stronger on the bike as the year goes along. Last year my avg. speed on my first ride was 12.8 mph, today's was 13.07mph. I can think of a few reasons (Not Excuses) for the similar outputs, I don't have the weather from last year but it was a little breezy out this morning, 10 - 12 mph gusting to 17mph from the southwest.... and I climbed 15% more on today's ride than I did on last years ride... and last but not least, my quads are still hurting from my leg workout, so I didn't have the feeling of "fresh" legs....  those sound like excuses don't they, LOL No really, I was just trying to find answers.

The ride itself was a mix of quiet suburban streets and busy urban streets, I enjoy both... most of the time. But early in the year you have a lot of potholes to dodge and that could drive the cars behind you nuts. You always have to be alert as to where all the cars around you are, and where all the possible cars could be coming from. Not to mention being aware of parked cars that might have someone opening a door right into your path. You have to be in the moment 100% of the time. Close to the end of the ride my butt started to get sore and my back started to ache... this is normal beginning of the year maladies and will go away the more I ride.
