Slow Speeder

One of the questions that are always on those longevity tests, to see how long you can expect to live, is "Do you often drive faster than the posted speed?" And if you answer yes, you take 1 - 3 years off of your life, depending on the test. I always answer yes, because I do speed, I admit it. But I don't understand how I lose 3 years from driving fast. If my life expectancy without the speeding is 87, does that mean I will die in a car accident at 84? I don't get the connection.
Here in America, where the speed limit is 55 or 65, there's 11 highway deaths for every 100,000 people. In Germany, where there is no speed limit, there are 5 deaths for every 100,000 people. So Germany has less than half of the Highway Fatalities that The United States has with no speed limit. So how does speeding shorten your life?
Anyway, I'm putting slower driving on my New Years Resolution list, so I can live longer on paper.
